Puntland Election Results Show Promise for One Person, One Vote in Somalia

Whoever said Somalia was stuck in a stalemate situation of terrorism and civil unrest and was not progressing was wrong, and the proof of progress and the evidence for a mature democracy came from no other than President Saed Dani of the state of Puntland. Unsurprisingly, the state of Puntland assumed the lead towards democracy as Puntland always showed good governance and order while others were in civil war. Moreover, Puntland is also the mother of federalism, making her more experienced than other states. For instance, it would be astonishing if the state of Hirshabelle assumed the lead in democracy and successfully executed 1p1v before the other states.

The real surprise came from how people and different types of politicians reacted to the fact that the state of Puntland, with the leadership of President Saed Deni, successfully executed 1p1v. The Somali people, no matter where we're happy with this progress, and it gave them hope that this new step towards democracy would spread faster than COVID-19 all over the country. But unfortunately, prominent politicians, state and federal, disagree with this fact without convincing arguments. What statement could they have against progress? What we are all working towards and, as the country's youth, expect is change and a step towards full democracy.

President Saed Dani has done what's expected from every leader in Somalia today, state and federal. Puntland has shown that it can be done, and we shouldn't expect any less from now on. However, I understand this will affect the balance of power, which is politicians are opposing the idea, but the greater good should be their concern, and they must welcome the change. History teaches us that those who oppose progress regret their actions. So we must learn from history and embrace this change and promote it.

In summary, I applaud this action taken by President Saed Dani; history remembers those who bring change, and history will remember President Saed Dani as it will also remember those who oppose progress and change.
